The truth about the LS1
The all aluminum LS1 motor is standard in all the '98 and up F-bodies (Camaros and Firebirds), and all the '97 and up Corvettes (with the exception of the Z06, which has the LS6 motor). General Motors advertised the horsepower output at 305 base horsepower (bhp = flywheel horsepower; using the '98-'99 specs) for the F-bodies, and 345 bhp for the Corvettes ('97-'99 specs). Well let me be the bearer of bad news to tell you that GM's horsepower ratings are bullshit! GM tried to de-tune the LS1 in the F-bodies by putting more restrictive exhaust manifolds, slightly different cam profiles, more emissions equipment for smog, more restrictive exhaust/muffler system, etc. Well, it comes to no surprise that GM failed to succeed their task. Back in '98, when people began dyno testing their cars to get a baseline rear wheel horsepower (rwhp) for their stock Camaro Z28 or SS, Firebird Formula or Trans Am, everyone was surprised to see that their rwhp levels were matching a lot of the '97-'98 Corvettes. In some cases, the F-body would have more rwhp than the all mighty Corvette. On average, the LS1 F-bodies would pull around 290-300 rwhp in the 6 speed manual, and around 280-290 rwhp in the 4 speed automatic. Those numbers are considered the "norm", or the "usual" rwhp output of the F-bodies. There have been cases where some people have dynoed less than the average numbers, and then there are cases where people have dynoed more than the average numbers. Hope this gave you some insight of the LS1.
Another common "Myth"
Another myth that is circulating is that the "Ram Air" cars (Camaro SS, WS6 TA or Formula) are more powerful than the base models, because "Ram Air" supposedly adds an extra 15 hp. *(ahem...bullshit...ahem)* The only factory "Ram Air" cars that will make a little more rwhp, are either the Firehawk TA or Formula; or a Camaro SS with the SLP catback option. The Firehawks come standard with the SLP catback. I hope this settles any misconceptions that you may have had.
Below is one example of a totally "bone stock" LS1 dyno run. The car is a '98 Camaro Z28. Factor in the drivetrain loss of approximately 15 % (the average drivetrain loss for 6 speed LS1's, and about 18 % to 20% for automatics), and that equates to around 343 hp/366 tq.
( 291.5 / 0.85 = 342.9 ) horsepower ( 311.3 / 0.85 = 366.2 ) torque
